In the heart of Waroona, a small town in regional Western Australia, Schlam Payload’s production facility, home of the Barracuda Mining Buckets, is redefining what’s possible in the mining industry. Despite operating in a traditionally male-dominated field, this facility stands as a beacon of progress, championing gender equality and fostering a work environment where women thrive.
Leading the Charge in Diversity
At the core of Schlam’s Waroona operations is a female-led office environment with strong female leadership and a growing number of female apprentices. The diverse environment challenges outdated perceptions and highlights the capability of women to excel in demanding industrial roles.
Branch Manager, Sheree Clancy, began her career with Schlam in 2012. With a strong background in accounts, procurement and project management, she worked her way up to the Branch Manager role in 2022. Now overseeing the entire Waroona operation, she ensures this world-class production facility runs smoothly and provides equal opportunity for all employees, including the recruitment of females into Schlam’s apprenticeship program.
A Thriving Apprenticeship Program
Schlam’s commitment to nurturing talent is evident in its apprenticeship program, which has seen a steady rise in female apprentices. This program not only provides hands-on experience but also opens doors for career progression, ensuring that young women are equipped with the skills to take on critical roles in the industry.
This program has had great success. While some have stayed with Schlam, others have undertaken careers working at major mining operations and have done so with the right skills, knowledge and confidence.
A Commitment to Lasting Change
As Schlam expands its global footprint, its dedication to gender diversity remains a priority. In late 2024, the company strengthened its Diversity and Inclusion efforts through the formation of an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) committee. This initiative will further enhance opportunities for women and reinforce Schlam’s mission to create an inclusive workforce.
Celebrating Progress on International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day 2025 serves as a reminder to accelerate action toward gender equality. Schlam’s Waroona facility is proof that significant change can happen anywhere—regardless of size or location. By fostering an inclusive culture and supporting female apprentices, and championing strong leadership, Schlam is making a lasting impact on the mining sector.
A World-Class Manufacturing Hub
Schlam’s Waroona facility is not just a leader in diversity—it is also a world-class manufacturing facility producing Barracuda mining buckets. These high-performance buckets are used at leading mine sites across Australia, reinforcing the facility’s reputation for excellence in the industry.
In an ever-evolving world, Waroona’s Schlam facility is a testament that no matter where you are, you can drive meaningful change.
