Blast Your Way Into A FIFO Job

Blast Your Way Into A FIFO Job

As the mining sector continues to prove a gold mine for job opportunities and companies desperate for quality talent, it’s no surprise that flying in and flying out work is becoming more popular with young professionals.

“Fly-in-fly-out”, more commonly referred to as FIFO, is the term used to describe someone who flies to a job site to complete work, stays onsite in accommodation to complete their roster, and then flies home.

The site typically provides self-contained accommodation, catered meals, room cleaning, and recreational facilities for workers. Some of the larger mining companies have state-of-the-art gym equipment, swimming pools and sporting facilities to help you stay fit and healthy while onsite.

One of the biggest lures of the FIFO lifestyle is the high wages and long periods of time off.

At Schlam, we get asked a lot about how candidates with no experience can break into the mining sector and secure a FIFO position, and thankfully we might just have the opportunities you are looking for.

Have you got experience in operating high-pressure cleaning equipment?

Our high-pressure cleaning division, TPCM, can offer you a long-term career and a leg up into the mining industry, as well as full on-the-job training. We are a service provider to some of the leading mining and resource companies in the Pilbara, specialising in high pressure & high-temperature cleaning services for structural inspection and major maintainance activities mining earthmoving equipment.

The role itself requires the use of high-pressure cleaning equipment to clean, maintain and detail fixed and mobile plant, earthmoving equipment, bulk lubricant storage and workshops. Cab Detailing, clean-up work and general labour is also part of the daily duties.

In Western Australia, depending on which site you work at, flights are between 1-2 hours away from Perth, often with the airstrip on the mine site itself. The regular commute can be cumbersome, but the industry attracts some of the highest rates in the country.

You can expect a 12-hour shift as a standard, working 7 days a week. The most common roster arrangement is 8 days on followed by 6 days off, or sometimes 14 days on followed by 7 days off, also known as 2/1.

FIFO entry-level rates can fetch from +$45 per hour, with rosters that are becoming increasingly family-friendly. Rate increase with the more experience you gain.

What experience do you need to be considered?

  • High-Pressure Cleaning Experience – Beneficial
  • Physically fit and healthy
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence – HR desirable
  • Forklift, EWP tickets – desirable
  • Working at Heights – desirable
  • Able to pass pre-employment medical

Better still, if you don’t have the above desirable tickets, we’ll help you to obtain them!

Both casual or permanent contracts are available and your choice of FIFO or DIDO conditions. With superannuation paid on all hours, and all training/inductions fully paid, you will be rewarded with a kick-start to your mining career with an industry-leading company.

Let’s face it, there are plenty of reasons to choose TPCM to start your career in mining.
