Line boring FAQs

WHEN IS LINE BORING NEEDED?

Line boring is needed when moving components become worn and degraded, usually from harsh work environments.

Symptoms indicating the need for line boring could be visual, for example, excessive movement within pivoting components or cracks showing due to wear around pivoting components.

Some symptoms are audible too, including speaking or grinding noises increasing over time.

WHAT ARE THE MOBILE LINE BORING INDUSTRY STANDARDS?

Using strict Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Job Safety Analysis guides (JSA’s) ensures high standards are met.

In addition to welding checks, materials need to be identified so that the correct tooling, cooling, speed and feed can be used.

Schlam takes industry standards and client regulations into account.

WHAT RESOURCES AND TOOLS ARE USED?

High quality and precision line boring and bore welding machines are tools of the trade for our technicians.

We also require pins and bushes to be engineered to complete a job. Each job is unique and can demand out-the-box solutions and additional equipment.

Further tools include:

  • Flange facing tools
  • Journal Turning Lathes
  • Clamshell tools
  • Portable Mills
  • Bevelling tools

WHAT IS THE LINE BORING PROCESS?

  • Bore measured for repair and appropriate bearing mounts for the job are calculated
  • Grease removed / cleaned along with rust or paint from the faces of the holes to ensure no porosity while welding or low-quality welds
  • Bearing mounts set up and bar guided to the centre of the hole/holes using three jaw set up chucks, discs or cones (whichever is more appropriate) and tack weld the bearing mounts in place
  • Finer adjusts bar to the correct position in the hole/holes by measuring from a datum point
  • Boring machine calibrated and set and should welding  not be needed or after the welding process is complete, machine the bore to the required size
  • If bore welding is required, bore holes ensuring that there is a clean cut all the way through to remove any rust or impurities that may affect the welding process
  • Boring machine removed to enable bore weld
